Clarksville Academy celebrates state title

MURFREESBORO— After he watched his team blow a 23-point lead in regulation and get down by five in the second overtime, Coach Josh Smith didn’t like Clarksville Academy’s chances to win the first state title in the school’s history.

But Martin Smith hit a 3-pointer that changed the momentum, and theCougars beat Grace Baptist 82-77 in the Class A boys basketball championship Saturday at MTSU.

“I hate to admit it, but when they were up five, I was thinking it may be over,” Josh Smith said. “I thought, ‘How could I have let this happen?’ I’m responsible out there. I let my team down. But Martin hit that 3 and it was as if the energy just rose back up in our kids.”

The Smith brothers combined for 61 points with Martin scoring 32 and Malcolm adding 29. Malcolm Smith was named Class A Mr. Basketball.
